Last year, the Supreme Court ruled that “affirmative action” was prohibited, and this year, the number of Asian students admitted to prestigious American universities has decreased significantly, drawing attention.
On the 6th, Bloomberg News reported that the results of analyzing the freshman admissions at Yale and Princeton this year showed that the enrollment rate of Asian students decreased at both universities.
According to Bloomberg, the Asian student enrollment rate at Yale decreased significantly from 30% last year to 24%. At Princeton, the Asian student enrollment rate decreased by 2.2% year-on-year to 23.8%.
These figures seem to be significant because Yale and Princeton did not distinguish between race in their freshman admissions this year, following the Supreme Court’s ruling last year.
The Yale Daily News, Yale’s student newspaper, reported that among the incoming freshmen, white students increased by 4% to 46%, while Latino students increased by 1% to 19%, the highest ever.
On the other hand, the percentage of Latino students at Princeton decreased from 10% to 9%.
The percentage of black students remained stable, at Yale at 14% and at Princeton at 9%.
In the case of MIT, Asian student enrollment increased significantly from 40% to 47% last year, and at Amherst College, Asian student enrollment also increased by 2% to 20%.
Before the results of the Asian student enrollment declines at Yale and Princeton came out, the Asian student enrollment increase at MIT and Amherst was reported, and the Asian student group 80-20
had also predicted that the end of affirmative action would lead to a significant increase in Asian student enrollment.
The group filed a lawsuit against Harvard in 2014, claiming that it discriminated against Asian students.
The group did not comment on the results of the Asian student enrollment declines at Yale and Princeton.
