A Rare Planetary Alignment Fascinates Skywatchers Worldwide on April 17th, 2025

After a rare occurrence of the planetary alignment, also known as planetary parade, on February 28th, 2025, there will be another planetary alignment on April 17th, 2025 featuring a small alignment of Neptune, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus. Although there are only four planets aligning, studies show that these alignments occur every few years.
What is a Planetary Alignment?

A planetary alignment is an astronomical event where planets in our solar system align next to the side of the sun. Each planet orbits on its plane and each planets’ speeds vary, causing planetary alignments to occur not oftenly. This event is called a planetary alignment, which is also called planetary parade, is an occuring where bright planets (4 planets in this planetary alignment) can be seen in the sky with the naked eye. The planets do not line up in a straight line, as it cannot be achieved in a three dimensional world. In our solar system, planets orbit around the sun in a flat, disc-shaped plane. When viewed on Earth, the disc-shaped plane looks like a line, which is called the elliptic or the ecliptic plane.

The planets can be seen on Earth as a small sector in the sky aligned with each other. As it is not exceptionally rare, four to five planet alignment happens in between a few years, which is worth the watch. As the planets in our solar system orbit the sun, they periodically line up in space with each other in events. However, these alignments do not harm or cause any impact on Earth in any sort of way, including earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, or any other natural disaster. Astronomers are able to figure out the calculations of when the planets orbit around the sun, therefore, being
able to predict a planetary alignment in the future. These orbits also have a predictable pattern, allowing astronomers to track the planets easier.

When will the Planetary Alignment Occur?

The four planets, Neptune, Mercury, Saturn, and Venus will align on the morning of April 17th, 2025. The date: April 17th, 2025, is a median date based on where the alignment will be most visible around the world. Therefore, the most ideal day to watch the alignment may differ, alternating on the location. Research has found that five planets are visible to the naked eye including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn since ancient times. In the planetary alignment, three planets will be visible: Mercury, Saturn, and Venus. Since planets take quite a long time to orbit the sun, generally, planetary alignments last for weeks or even months.

How to Observe the Planetary Alignment

The best way to observe planetary alignment is to be at the right place and the right time. The alignment will be visible around an hour before sunrise. Planets rise higher above the horizon, therefore, locations closer to the equator or southern latitudes will have preferable viewing conditions. The alignment will be more visible when it is a few degrees above horizon, preferably 10 degrees above the horizon. If a planet appears to be low within the sunset glow, the planets will likely not be visible. This is critical since celestial objects dim as it gets closer to the Earth’s atmosphere near the ground.

This alignment particularly will be perfectly visible in the Southern Hemisphere. When the sky is still dark, the planets will be visible because they rise above the eastern horizon. However, in the Northern Hemisphere, only Venus will be able to see because the sky would be lit by sunlight, not letting the other planets visible. It would be best to view the alignment in an open sky without any light pollution or any high mountains blocking the view. People who live in cities can go to open spaces such as a park or any other dark area for the planets to be visible. While Mercury, Saturn, and Venus will be visible to the naked eye, Neptune will have to be seen with a pair of binoculars or a small telescope.

Why is this an Important Watch?

When four planets align, it is considered as a small planetary alignment, which happens a couple of times in between years. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn are frequently visible in the night sky, however, the showcase of Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, and Venus that make a four planet alignment are particularly rare. The alignment isn’t just an ordinary spectacle where planets align on the sky, but it reminds us of human curiosity and the rare phenomenon our solar system provides. This also sparks new questions and ideas about our vast universe and how it creates constant phenomenons visible on Earth.

While four planets aligning in the sky is not a rare phenomenon, it is worth the watch as it does not happen often in between a few years. Once again, the next planetary alignment occurs on the morning of April 17th, 2025, which displays four planets visible in the sky with the naked eye.
