Marcel Hirscher, who retired in 2019 at the peak of his career, is hinting at a comeback next season. He is a two time Austrian olympian who won two golds in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic.
Hirscher’s career was marked by a consistency and brilliance that is rare in any sport. With 67 World Cup victories, he is second only to the legendary Ingemar Stenmark in men’s World Cup race wins. He also won seven World Championship titles and two Olympic gold medals, further cementing his status as a skiing icon.
When Hirscher announced his retirement in September 2019, he cited the physical and mental toll of the sport, as well as a desire to spend more time with his family, as reasons for stepping away. “For me a comeback is when you get injured and want to return to where you left off”, he said. “My career [has been] over for five years.” This time, Hirscher isn’t returning to dominate. “For me it’s now about balancing family, business and sport”, he explains. “Now I have to demonstrate my multitasking talent.”
Comeback
The idea of Hirscher returning to competitive skiing has been a topic of speculation since his retirement. In recent months, these rumors have gained traction, fueled by social media posts and interviews in which Hirscher has hinted at a possible return. The prospect of seeing him back on the slopes has fans buzzing, as they imagine the possibility of Hirscher once again challenging the best in the world.
In a recent interview, Hirscher spoke about his physical condition and the challenges of a potential return. “I’m in good shape, but competition is another level,” he said. “It would be a huge challenge to get back to where I was, but I’m not ruling anything out.”
One of the key factors driving the comeback rumors is Hirscher’s continued involvement in the sport. Since retiring, he has remained close to skiing, launching his own ski brand, Van Deer, and participating in various events and exhibitions. His passion for the sport is evident, and it’s clear that skiing remains a significant part of his life.
Impact
If Hirscher decided to return to competitive skiing, the impact would be enormous. His presence would undoubtedly elevate the level of competition in the World Cup circuit.
Moreover, a comeback would provide a fascinating narrative for the sport. How would Hirscher fare against the current crop of top skiers, many of whom rose to prominence during his absence? Would he be able to reclaim his dominance?
For now, the skiing world waits with bated breath, hoping to once again witness the brilliance of Marcel Hirscher on the slopes.
