In a landmark moment for Major League Soccer, Son Heung-min, the beloved South Korean football icon and longtime Tottenham Hotspur captain, has officially signed with Los Angeles FC in a deal that has sent shockwaves through the footballing world.
The move, finalized earlier this week, sees Son join LAFC in what is now confirmed as the most expensive signing in MLS history, with the reported transfer fee reaching approximately $26.5 million. The 33-year-old forward departs the Premier League after nine seasons with Spurs, where he became a fan favorite and club legend.
A Farewell to London
Son bid farewell to Spurs during an emotional press event in Seoul, where he thanked fans for their unwavering support and reflected on his journey in English football.
“Tottenham has been my home for nearly a decade,” Son said through tears. “I’ve grown as a player and a person in London, and I’ll always be grateful. But I’m ready for a new challenge and a new home in Los Angeles.”
During his time with Spurs, Son scored over 150 goals across all competitions and was named club captain in 2023. He played a pivotal role in helping Tottenham secure the UEFA Europa League title earlier this year—ending the club’s 16-year trophy drought.

LAFC’s New Era
Los Angeles FC officially welcomed Son to the team on Tuesday, releasing a promotional video featuring the Korean superstar arriving in the heart of LA. The club’s front office described the move as a “game-changer,” both on and off the pitch.
“Son is not just a world-class footballer—he’s a global icon,” said LAFC co-president Larry Freedman. “This signing represents LAFC’s ambition to lead not only in MLS but in world football.”
Son is expected to debut later this month and will likely play a leadership role, guiding younger players while energizing LAFC’s attack alongside stars like Denis Bouanga and Timothy Tillman.
A Cultural and Commercial Impact
Beyond football, Son’s arrival is expected to draw massive commercial interest. LA has one of the largest Korean populations outside of South Korea, and LAFC is already reporting record-breaking merchandise preorders and social media engagement.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber praised the signing, stating, “Bringing in a player of Son’s caliber is a proud moment for our league. He embodies everything we want MLS to stand for—talent, humility, and global reach.”
What’s Next?
Son’s move is already being compared to David Beckham’s 2007 arrival at LA Galaxy, which dramatically shifted the global perception of MLS. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see if Son can make a similar impact on and off the field.
As Son begins his new journey in Los Angeles, he leaves behind a legacy at Tottenham—and steps into a bright new chapter that could redefine the future of football in America.
